Non-surgical and Surgical Treatments of Rectal Prolapse

Non-surgical and Surgical Treatments of Rectal Prolapse

In the previous blog, we talked about rectal prolapse – symptoms and causes. In today’s blog, I want to shed more light on effective treatments that are available to help you regain comfort and confidence. As a dedicated colorectal surgeon with an interest in and focus on pelvic floor disorders, I'm here to provide specialized care tailored to your unique needs.

Treatment for rectal prolapse typically falls into two categories: non-surgical and surgical. Non-surgical approaches may include dietary changes, fiber supplements to help bulk and soften stool, and pelvic floor physical therapy to strengthen pelvic floor muscles and achieve bowel regularity. These methods can be effective in managing milder cases and preventing worsening of rectal prolapse.

For more severe cases or situations where non-surgical management has not improved symptoms, surgical intervention may be necessary. There are various surgical techniques available, that involve either an abdominal or perineal (ie through the anal canal) approach, which aim to reposition the rectum inside of the pelvis and restore its proper alignment. The choice of treatment depends on the individual patient's condition and the recommendation of a skilled colorectal surgeon.

I offer personalized evaluations, precise diagnoses, and tailored treatment plans to help you on your path to recovery. If surgery is recommended, I offer a minimally invasive robotic approach which involves 5 small incisions which are the width of your fingernail. Don't let rectal prolapse hold you back—reach out today for compassionate and individualized care to restore your pelvic health and well-being.
