Understanding Bowel and Bladder Incontinence: Causes, Treatment, and Support

Bowel and bladder incontinence are two common yet often misunderstood conditions that can significantly impact one's quality of life. Bowel - or fecal - incontinence refers to the inability to control bowel movements, leading to unexpected leakage of stool. Similarly, bladder - or urinary - incontinence involves the involuntary release of urine, ranging from occasional leaks to complete loss of bladder control. These conditions can arise from various factors such as muscle weakness, disturbances in pelvic organ anatomy, nerve damage, or underlying health issues.

Approximately 18 million Americans suffer from bowel incontinence, while over 25 million experience bladder incontinence. However, it's important to note that many individuals may not seek treatment due to embarrassment or misconceptions about available options. Despite how common bladder and bowel incontinence are, only a small number of patients seek help for this issue.

The great news is that treatment is available for both bladder and bowel incontinence. These treatments can range from dietary modifications and pelvic floor exercises to medications and surgical procedures. There are also support groups and resources are accessible to provide guidance and emotional support for patients who are affected by bowel and bladder issues.

At Houston Community Surgical, Dr. Belizaire provides a safe, judgement free environment for patients to discuss all colorectal related health issues, including bowel and bladder incontinence.
