What is Sacral Neuromodulation?

What is Sacral Neuromodulation?

Sacral neuromodulation (SNM) - also known as sacral nerve stimulator (SNS) also known as interstim - is an innovative and minimally invasive treatment option for people who suffer from bladder and bowel incontinence as well as chronic constipation and other pelvic floor disorders.

It is performed in two low risk, outpatient procedures (ie no hospital stay). This therapeutic approach involves the implantation of a small device, similar to a pacemaker, under the skin near the sacral nerves, which play a crucial role in controlling bladder and bowel function. The device delivers mild electrical impulses to modulate the activity of these nerves, helping to restore normal bladder and bowel control.

SNM has proven to be highly effective in managing symptoms of urinary and fecal incontinence that have not responded to conservative treatments or medications. The procedure is typically performed in two stages: first, a temporary electrode is inserted during a trial period to assess its effectiveness in improving symptoms. If successful, a permanent implant is then placed, providing long-term relief. SNM offers patients a reversible treatment option with minimal side effects, making it an attractive choice for those seeking alternatives to more invasive surgical procedures.

The device is MRI compatible and does not create issues for people when traveling. The device sits under the skin of the gluteal soft tissue and discomfort is minimal. Patients with a sacral nerve stimulator can do all of the activities they could do before – swim, exercise, travel, take baths, run, pick up their kids/grandkids/puppies, etc.

The device and procedures are generally covered by most commercial insurance plans including Medicare.

Because it is so effective and I have witnessed people’s lives change in a matter of two weeks, it is hands down one of my favorite procedures to do. There is nothing better than restoring quality of life to another human, in my humble opinion.

At Houston Community Surgical, I provide a safe, judgement free environment for patients to discuss all colorectal related health issues, including bowel and bladder incontinence.
